The E-Science-Tage are an interdisciplinary conference series on the topics of research data management and open science - with a wide range of opportunities for professional exchange between science and technology.

The contributions of the E-Science-Tage 2025 are available since November 5 on https://doi.org/10.11588/heibooks.1652 as well as in printed form in bookshops. Authors and co-authors get a 50 % reduction on the price of the printed version. E-Science-Tage: Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges
Research in the age of digital transformation requires, more than ever, a coordinated yet open and self-critical environment. High-performance infrastructures and services for research data management (RDM) continue to form the central foundation for efficiently managing, safeguarding and making research data accessible throughout its entire life cycle. However, as RDM structures become increasingly established, the question is increasingly being raised as to how interoperable these services actually are – both within the scientific community and beyond.
Against this backdrop, the E-Science-Tage 2027, with the motto “Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges”, are deliberately conceived as a space for new perspectives and also for critical reflection. The aim is to move beyond familiar ways of thinking and acting and to constructively scrutinise existing approaches to research data management. The conference seeks to provide impetus that extends beyond the established RDM community and, in particular, to involve voices from the research community more closely. After all, sustainable and needs-based solutions can only emerge through close dialogue with those who work with data on a daily basis.
At the same time, research and RDM continue to face profound challenges: technological developments such as artificial intelligence are fundamentally transforming scientific practices, whilst legal, institutional and financial frameworks appear increasingly complex and, at times, contradictory. These dynamics require not only coordinated strategies, but also the courage to bring together different perspectives and to explore new avenues of collaboration.
The E-Science-Tage 2027 therefore offer a platform for open dialogue on the opportunities, limitations and conflicting objectives of research data management and Open Science. The focus is on discussing how barriers between disciplines, stakeholders and systems can be overcome and how sustainable bridges can be built for a future-proof science.

Please note the following information regarding the hybrid format of the event: only some of the events listed below will be streamed online. Event formats that will be streamed online in real time include keynote talks, the discussion session, a selection of presentation panels, and all lightning talks. Please note that interaction with the online audience will not be possible at the E-Science-Tage 2027. Event formats that will NOT be streamed online in real time include workshops and the poster session, as well as some of the presentations. Please bear this in mind when booking.
Regular Presentations
Presentations on research data management and open science, e.g., presentations on technical challenges, the solutions developed for them, and their concrete implementation.
Tandem Talks
Joint presentations by infrastructure managers, researchers and/or cooperation partners from industry on RDM-related concepts, developments, and services on the one hand and needs and benefits from this cooperation on the other.
Lightning Talks
Short, maximum five-minute presentations on projects, challenges, and key points in research data management.
Poster-Session
Offers the opportunity for networks, initiatives, infrastructure facilities, and e-science projects to present themselves based on a poster.
Workshops
Workshops provide space for exchange on specific services, tools, or projects, focus on interaction, and are heavily based on audience input.
Diskussion
Discussion among participants of the conference on a current, relevant topic from the field of e-science and research data management.

- What barriers exist between research data management and scientific practice – and how can these be overcome in practical terms?
- To what extent do existing RDM services actually meet researchers’ needs, and where is there a need for adaptation?
- How can a constructive approach to dealing with criticism of research data management be developed?
- What perspectives are researchers from different disciplines already contributing to the discourse on RDM and open science - and how can these be better integrated?
- What role do power structures, incentive systems and institutional frameworks play in the implementation of best practices and open science?
- What new challenges and opportunities arise from the increased use of artificial intelligence in research practice?
- How can sustainable collaboration be achieved between infrastructure staff at research institutions and other public data producers, such as federal states’ statistical offices, researchers and, where relevant, stakeholders from the private sector?
- To echo the conference’s theme: what barriers must be overcome in order to build sustainable bridges between FDM stakeholders, the research community and industry?

The E-Science-Tage are organized by the project bwFDM in cooperation with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the University of Konstanz and University of Heidelberg.
